ATELIERmh is a dynamic selling and exhibition space adjacent to Michal Gilboa-David’s artist studio, located at the heart of the historic neighborhood of Neve Tzedek in Tel Aviv. The place displays abstract drawing, illustration and etching as well as products of collaboration between Gilboa-David and her daughter – Hadass Gilboa.
Michal Gilboa-David engages in lyrical abstract drawing, also presenting here works which combine familiar images, or readymade, with the abstract. Hadass Gilboa is a multidisciplinary guest artist, exhibiting illustration and etching. The collaboration between the two artists is realized in a number of ways, such as joint works (created by working together on the same surface) and duo exhibitions, and is clearly evident in the artworks manner of display and positioning around the space.
The mode of display is based on A-Frame, a treated platform (made of wood or plastic) associated with the design field. It is used here as a connector which allows assembling and creating groups of works according to a preferred personal arrangement, similar to an exhibition curated on walls.
ATELIERmh introduces the viewer with collaborative intellectual and creative processes; therefore more than a showing room, it is a space intended for experimental activity, offering a view of done works alongside works in process. The working area is vibrant and open to the general public, inviting passing by visitors to maintain a close dialogue with the exhibited works.
Gilboa-David’s drawings originate from a mental state, and explore terms such as order, rhythm, circularity, direction, weight, noise, symmetry and patterns. Each term is independently examined through a group of lines gathering volume, shape and color, jointly interwoven in a manner which brings to the front and highlights a different term every time.
An additional group of works blurs the differences between the concrete and the conceptual, as it brings together conceptual abstract pieces and inherently familiar, practical readymade object, which also represents a certain explicit memory. As part of the working process, the readymade object is reduced to its basic shape, to which Gilboa-David then attaches an abstract image, thereby constructing a different image carrying new traces.
Hadass Gilboa is a multidisciplinary artist, creating in a range of mediums and techniques, such as drawing on paper, traditionally created etching and stop-motion animation based video. Gilboa’s work stems from illustration, hence it relies on a narrative way of thinking, borrowing elements from common myths, Christian iconography and Middle Ages folklore.
ATELIERmh הינו חלל מכירה ותצוגה דינמי המצוי בסמיכות לסדנת האמן של מיכל גלבוע-דוד בשכונת נווה צדק ההיסטורית. במקום מוצגות עבודות רישום, איור ותחריט וכן אוסף עבודות פרי עבודתן המשותפת של גלבוע-דוד וביתה – האמנית הדס גלבוע המתארחת במקום. שיתוף הפעולה בין צמד האמניות בא לידי ביטוי במספר רבדים, החל באופן הצגת והצבת העבודות, בקיומן של תערוכות זוגיות, ועד לעבודה משותפת על גבי אותו מצע.
מיכל גלבוע-דוד הינה אמנית רישום מופשט לירי. עבודותיה חוקרות מושגים כמו סדר, מקצב, מחזוריות, כיוון, משקל, רעש, סימטריה ותבניות, מתוך נקודת מוצא של מצב נפשי. כל מושג נבדק בפני עצמו באמצעות מכלול קווים המקבלים חוזק, צורה וצבע, ואשר נארגים יחדיו ברישום באופן כזה שבו בכל פעם מודגש מושג אחר ומובא אל קדמת הבמה.
קבוצת עבודות נוספת מטשטשת את ההגדרות והגבולות בין הקונקרטי למושגי, ומפגישה בין 'אובייקט' רדי-מייד, שמעצם טבעו הינו מוכר, שימושי ומייצג זיכרון ברור, ובין עבודות מופשט קונספטואלי. בתהליך העבודה האובייקט עובר רדוקציה עד שהופך הוא לכדי צורה בלבד - אליה מחברת גלבוע-דוד דימוי מופשט, ולמעשה בונה כך דימוי אחר הנושא עימו עקבות חדשות.
הדס גלבוע היא אמנית רב-תחומית, היוצרת במגוון מדיומים וטכניקות, ביניהם: רישום על גבי נייר, תחריט בטכניקה מסורתית, ווידאו מבוסס אנימציית stop motion. עבודתה יוצאת מתוך איור, ונשענת בהתאם על חשיבה נראטיבית מובהקת, השואבת אלמנטים מתוך מיתוסים מוכרים, איקונוגרפיה נוצרית ופולקלור של ימי הביניים.
עקרון התצוגה בחלל בא לידי ביטוי באמצעות A-Frame, מצע מטופל (מעץ או מפלסטיק) הנוגע בעיצוב, ומשמש כאן כמחבר המאפשר לייצר ולבנות מקבצי עבודות בהתאם לסדר אישי, בדומה לתערוכה הנאצרת על קיר.
ATELIERmh חושף בפני הצופה תהליכים מחשבתיים ויצירתיים משותפים: מעבר להיותו חלל תצוגה, הוא מהווה מרחב להתנסוּת, ומוצגות בו עבודות גמורות לצד עבודות בתהליך. סביבת העבודה פעילה ופתוחה לקהל הרחב באופן קבוע, ומזמינה את המבקרים במקום לקיים דיאלוג קרוב עם העבודות המוצגות בו.
